As well as PCs left on overnight, a big culprit is “server sprawl”, where companies install a new server for every new software application they run. According to research firm IDC, the number of servers in use jumped from six million to 28 million in the decade from 1996, while the average power consumption of a typical server rose from 150W to 400W.
Recruitment agency Reed Managed Services went down this route, replacing 300 servers with “blades” - rack-mounted servers that share resources to make them more efficient. Reed’s data centre has cut approximately 5.4 million kWh off the company’s annual electricity bill, yet it runs 24/7, enabling the company to expand into Australia without adding new computers - the UK and Australian operations share the UK facility.
